You have not been this way before
“You have not been this way before”, God’s words to Israel as they prepared to cross the river Jordan and enter the land promised to them. They were to go into unknown territory.
Forty years before, twelve spies brought a report after exploring the land. Ten of them said it was a place of giants, walled cities, and the country would consume them. The people of Israel accepted this negative report, and they had to face the consequence of their choice. Everyone above the age of twenty, except for Joshua and Caleb, were to perish in the wilderness. God would take a new generation into the promised land, a generation that would take Him at His word.
They had to keep their eyes on God’s presence because they have not been this way before. The result was that they possessed the land and came into the fullness of God’s promises for them. Did they have to fight giants, face overwhelming odds, were the walled cities still there? Yes, yes and yes. Nothing had changed in the forty years.
The Covid 19 pandemic has been, at times, like a giant, overwhelming odds, a walled city. This latest wave has again brought delays in economic recovery, further deaths and setbacks. Although not on the same level, we at Citygate Church have adjusted our moving plans into the new building. Sometimes the situation we face is major and at other times minor.
In all of this, Jesus is our example. He ventured into each new day out of His intimate relationship with His Father, and because of that, he only spoke what he heard from God and only did what He saw God doing. As disciples of Jesus, let us constantly develop an intimate relationship with God the Father.
For us, each day is a new day. We do not know what it is bringing or what it will produce, for we have not been this way before. What we do know, however, is that God has said, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans for welfare and not evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11). Let us then keep our eyes on God and trust in His promises.
