Jesus is the reason we live. He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). He has won us over and our passion is to love him, worship him and follow him courageously every day.
We pursue authentic, honest relationships with one another. We honour and celebrate our diversity, yet build towards an inclusive unity. We protect and encourage those that are vulnerable and give generously of ourselves to see every person fulfill God’s call for their lives.
Jesus has called each one of us to shine his light into our dark world. Each day, we share and show the good news that Jesus is setting the world aright. We offer hope and healing, truth, justice and the forgiveness of God's kingdom to the world around us. We offer a new beginning to those who desire to live on earth as in heaven.
CityGate Church was established out of three communities.
First, Breakthru church was planted in 1997 by Matt and Gill McGaw from what is now known as Red Point Church, Pinetown. Paul and Beth Spooner succeeded Matt and Gill in leading the eldership team in 2004 and led Breakthru to a merger with Glenridge Church in 2010, establishing the Glenridge @Glenwood multi-site congregation in the process.
The third community is Citizen Church, which was planted in Glenwood by Drew and Megan Land in 2007 in Glenwood. In 2013, Citizen Church merged with Glenridge Church and most of its members joined the Glenridge @Glenwood congregation.
In 2019 the Glenridge eldership team, now led by Stan and Heather Phipps, felt that God was leading the Glenwood congregation towards greater autonomy and that a self-governing church in partnership with Glenridge was God's next step for this community.
And so, CityGate Church was established, not as a new church plant, but as a healthy, self-standing church which continues the multi-coloured journey of following Jesus, in close partnership with Glenridge, other churches in Durban and the apostolic input of the New Covenant Ministries International (NCMI) team.
